Jules Wallerstein

Jules Wallerstein was born March 1927 in Fuerth, Germany. He experienced "Kristallnacht," which took place on November 9, 1938 when the Nazis burned synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes and businesses, and the first arrests of Jewish men and boys took place. His father's store was destroyed on that day.

He and his family left for Cuba in May 1939 on the ill-fated S.S. St. Louis, which was turned away there and also by several other countries who would not accept the 937 Jewish passengers fleeing for their lives. Finally, they were accepted in Belgium. However, when the Nazis invaded Belgium they had to flee again and this time made it to France. In January 1942 they were finally able to get a visa for the United States.
